Vicar of Liskeard

St Martin, Liskeard Liskeard, England, United Kingdom
Description of Job

Vicar (Oversight Minister) for the benefice of Liskeard and St Keyne, Cornwall

Are you an experienced and inspiring evangelical leader with a pioneering attitude?

Have you got the skills and personality to join a worshipping community of 290, including 40+ children, and grow it numerically and spiritually?

Will you develop our established “Transforming Mission” programme to resource other local churches?

Do you actively engage with communities irrespective of age and background?

Can you recognise the differing needs of each church and embrace their broad traditions and worship styles?

If so, through the guidance of Jesus and the prompting of the Holy Spirit, is God calling YOU to lead the largest worshipping community in this Cornish diocese; a well-resourced 2 parish, 3 church Benefice?

Our vision is that through the power of the Spirit we can bring the love of Jesus to our community, making disciples and worshipping God together.

Our 3 churches comprise St Martin’s with around 250 members, St Keyne a small village church and Dobwalls a village church and LEP with the local Methodist circuit. All are welcoming, open evangelical churches, believing the Bible to be the inspired Word of God. Worship services are both traditional and contemporary.

The benefice is in South East Cornwall, south of Bodmin Moor and close to the South Cornish coast, with easy links to Plymouth, Truro and London. It is a rural area, with a largely white population, and there are pockets of significant deprivation within the town and surrounding areas.

All the churches use Common Worship services, though the contemporary services at St Martin’s are more informal. St Martin’s also offers more traditional worship with an organ and choir. Our mission priority is to reach our community with God’s love; providing practical ways for those outside the church to explore faith in Jesus. We desire to disciple our members, to work with children, young people and their families, and to care for those struggling with poverty, particularly through CAP.

We are looking for someone who will:

  1. Lead our staff team and nurture new disciples.
  2. Whilst continuing to grow all our churches, enable St Martin’s to become a resourcing church across South East Cornwall.
  3. Lead us into greater unity between the town and village churches.
  4. Provide oversight and support for St Martin’s Church Hall renovation project.
  5. Enable the development of our pastoral work, in town and villages.

As an oversight minister, we recognise that you cannot do everything, but we need a leader able to encourage and direct our wonderful staff team and large number of able and willing volunteers.

Our new vicar will be:

  1. Misson-focussed, with a passion for bringing people to faith.
  2. Able to lead growth and discipleship, and to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
  3. Having vision and strategic thinking, confident in enabling change.
  4. Able to develop and work with partners within the community.
  5. Experience in developing and enabling pastoral care teams.
  6. An understanding of both rural and town ministry.

St Martin’s Church in Liskeard is a growing open evangelical church, open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We are a Transforming Mission church, one of five churches across Cornwall to receive funding from the Diocese of Truro and the Church Commissioners to grow our church and to help other churches in Southeast Cornwall to grow as well.

St Martin’s is a Spirit-led, prayer-focused, Jesus-centred, worshipping community. Our missional priorities are:

-       Mission, evangelism & growth

-       Discipleship & Good teaching

-       Families & young people

-       Community & looking after the poor

We have a current worshipping community of about 290, including about 40 babies, children and youth. Our aim is to continue to grow, at least doubling the number of children and youth over the next few years. We are now just starting to work with other parishes and across Southeast Cornwall.
